Missy Mazzoli & Victoire:
Composers OutFront!

April 7, 2010, 7:30 pm

Victoire

“so good… a pleasingly accessible entrée into the world of pseudo-classical music” – Pitchfork

ACO will present two Composers OutFront! concerts featuring composer Missy Mazzoli and her chamber-rock ensemble,Victoire (Ms. Mazzoli, keyboards and compositions; Olivia De Prato violin; Eileen Mack, clarinet; Lorna Krier, keyboards; and Eleonore Oppenheim, double bass). Victoire performs Ms. Mazzoli’s distinct blend of dreamy post rock, quirky minimalism, and rich romanticism.

The first Composers OutFront! event featuring Victoire will be a free concert on Sunday, March 21 at 4pm, at the Central Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library (Grand Army Plaza, Brooklyn). No tickets or reservations are required. (Elena Moon Park substitutes for Olivia De Prato for this concert.) The second, co-presented by ACO and Le Poisson Rouge as part of the Wordless Music Series will be on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at 7:30 pm at Le Poisson Rouge (158 Bleecker St., NYC). Arp and Anthony Moore celebrate the release of their new FRKWYS collaboration for Rvng Intl. on the second half of the bill, which in keeping with Wordless Music’s mission, pairs rock/electronic musicians with classical performers in an intimate concert setting.

ACO’s annual Composers OutFront! series puts composers on the stage, bringing audiences closer to the creative process and making connections between composers’ roots as performers and their music for the concert hall. The series presents composers who will have major works performed by ACO during the concert season. In keeping with ACO’s eclectic musical programming, featured composers come from diverse backgrounds in jazz and improvised music, rock and pop, classical, and world music. Composers OutFront! events take place throughout the city in unusual spaces including community centers, museums and galleries, libraries, and other non-traditional venues for classical music.

Victoire & Missy Mazzoli

Victoire, a stirring blend of winds, strings, keyboards, and lo-fi electronics, was recently dubbed “an all-star, all-female quintet” by Time Out New York. Since forming in 2008, they have shared the stage with Tortoise, Twi the Humble Feather, Redhooker, Bing and Ruth, performing at many of New York’s top new music venues including the Bang on a Can Marathon, Galapagos, the Tank, The Stone, and the Whitney Museum. In spring 2009, they became the first classical artists to be featured on “eMusic.com Selects.” They released their debut EP, A Door into the Dark, on eMusic.com in March 2009, and will release a full-length album with New Amsterdam Records in 2010.

Missy Mazzoli was recently deemed “one of the more consistently inventive, surprising composers now working in New York” (New York Times) and “one of the new wave of scarily smart young composers” (Sequenza 21). She writes for melodicas, out-of-tune guitars and electronics as well as orchestras and string quartets to create a unique and personal sound. Her music has been performed by the Kronos Quartet, the Minnesota Orchestra, eighth blackbird, the Spokane Symphony, the South Carolina Philharmonic, Ensemble ACJW, NOW Ensemble, and many others.
Ms. Mazzoli is also active as an educator, arts advocate, and performer. She is Executive Director of the MATA Festival of New Music in New York, a festival founded by Philip Glass, Lisa Bielawa, and Eleonor Sandresky devoted to young composers. She recently taught beginning composition at Yale University, and has been a composer-in-residence with the Carnegie Hall Academy Program and the SUNY Fredonia New Music Festival.
