Tomás Cruz performs in a wide range of genres. He began his music training with Grammy-nominated jazz arranger and educator, Phil Mattson, in 2005. While getting his MM at New England Conservatory of Music with renowned vocalist Dominique Eade and pianist/composer Fred Hersch, Tomás began performing in the world tour of Philip Glass and Robert Wilson’s opera Einstein on the Beach. Other credits include work in both contemporary classical and choral music. Most notably, Tomás has performed and recorded Missy Mazzoli’s opera, Songs from the Uproar, a concert series with the Tri-Centric Orchestra, premiered and recorded new opera, Trillium J, by legendary jazz saxophonist/composer Anthony Braxton, Petr Kotik’s opera Masterpieces in the Ostrava Days Festival, and premiered Lisa Bielawa’s recent opera project, Vireo. Other recent credits include Andrea Galvani’s The End video installation at Art In General, workshopping Annie Dorsen’s show Yesterday/Tomorrow, premiered Yotam Haber’s We Were All as countertenor with new music ensemble Contemporaneous, and sang backup for Damien Rice’s recent show at the Apollo Theater.
Beyond classical music, Tomás has opened for Mick Jagger and Arcade Fire on SNL, performed and recorded with the late progressive folk band HEM, premiered sibling collaborators Melissa and Michael Sachs’ BDSM Mozart (Performa), and performed and recorded Brian Carpenter’s Book of Rhapsodies (2013), workshopped Barbary Coast, an old-western style musical commissioned by Berkeley Repertory Theater from Brian Carpenter and playwright Dominic Orlando, and sings with Helga Davis and Grammy-nominated jazz singer Carla Cook in Davis’ R&B showcase The Love Show. Tomás has been recorded on New Amsterdam Records, Accurate Records, New Braxton House Records, and See-A-Dot Music, among others.
This past year, Tomás performed with Heartbeat Opera, previewed Judd Greenstein’s forthcoming opera A Marvelous Order and choreographer Amber Sloan’s Voice of the Body (Draftwerks), performed in the recent three-month art installation The Back Door (Park Avenue Armory), recorded Chris Cerrone’s The Branch Will Break, and recorded on jazz pianist/composer Matthew Sheens’ Cloud Appreciation Day, with more to come. He regularly sings in a variety of professional ensembles including Duwende, Ekmeles, and the Marble Collegiate Choir.
