A native of Kansas City, MO, tenor Andrew Fuchs recently made his Lincoln Center debut in Bach’s Magnificat with the American Classical Orchestra. The music of J.S. Bach has come to play a central role in Andrew’s up-and-coming career, and he has excelled in his interpretations of the Evangelist in both the St. Matthew Passion (Saint Andrew Chorale, Canticum Novum Singers) and St. John Passion (Saint Andrew Chorale): “Fuchs made the Evangelist fully human and…served with exceptional skill” (TheaterScene). Andrew is also a member of the Choir of Trinity Wall Street where he is a frequent soloist on their “Bach at One” series at St. Paul’s Chapel.
Recent solo performances include Steve Reich’s Three Tales with Ensemble Signal at Walt Disney Concert Hall presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Brahms’s Liebeslieder and Neue Liebeslieder Waltzes with the Mark Morris Dance Group, the world premiere of Alexander Goehr’s Verschwindenes Wort for The Juilliard School’s Focus Festival, Misael in Britten’s The Burning Fiery Furnace and Tristan in Frank Martin’s Le Vin Herbé with Ballet-Opéra-Pantomime (Montreal), Tomasso in Laura Schwendinger’s opera Artemisia, tenor soloist with Downtown Voices in the premiere of Zachary Wadsworth’s Spire and Shadow, Purcell and Mozart with Berkshire Choral International, and appearances with ARTEK, Lyric Fest, and the Greenwich Choral Society.
An avid recitalist, Andrew spent two summers as a Vocal Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center. While there, he worked closely with Dawn Upshaw, Håkan Hagegård and Mark Morris. A 2015 Joy In Singing Finalist, he also was in the Professional Singers Program at SongFest, a finalist in the 2013 Liederkranz Competition (Art Song Division) and one of six singers selected to participate in the 2013 Fall Island Vocal Arts Seminar, a week-long program that focuses on American art song by living composers, led by Stephanie Blythe and Alan Louis Smith.
Andrew is also a sought-after professional choral/ensemble singer, frequently performing with the Choir of Trinity Wall Street, New York Polyphony, Clarion Music Society, the Choir of Men and Boys at Saint Thomas Church, the New York Virtuoso Singers, and Musica Sacra.
Highlights for 2016-2017 include a program of Barbara Strozzi with Pegasus Early Music, Steve Reich’s Daniel Variations and You Are with Ensemble Signal to celebrate Reich’s 80th birthday, a tour to Russia and the UK with the Clarion Music Society to premiere Maximilian Steinberg’s Passion Week, Monteverdi madrigals with ARTEK in Berkeley, Palestrina’s Missa Papae Marcelli with New York Polyphony, and a recital with oboist Scott Bartucca on the Music on Madison series in NYC.
Andrew completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Stony Brook University where he also earned his master’s degree. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas.
