American Composers Orchestra’s Compose Yourself! program for high school students gives student composers intensive, practical, hands-on instruction in the craft and art of music composition.
This semester, students have been asked to compose a piece in a genre with which they’ve had no prior experience AND they were tasked with hiring their own musicians (each student hired one member of the ensemble).
Join ACO Education Director Kevin James and his students for their end-of-semester reading session, featuring all of the students’ completed works.
Compose Yourself! is focused on helping the students to develop positive approaches to creativity, learning professional standards of preparation, and developing basic compositional skills in a supportive, hands-on environment. This semester, these young composers have been working in small group lessons and coaching with ACO education director Kevin James. This session is a pivotal moment in this process, when the students not only hear their ideas realized, but also learn to interact with musicians in a professional setting.
