EarShot – Berkeley Symphony Under Construction New Music Readings

Berkeley Symphony, Joana Carneiro, Music Director, in cooperation with EarShot, is pleased to once again invite applications for the 2015 EarShot – Berkeley Symphony Under Construction New Music Readings. Up to four emerging composers will be selected to participate from a national candidate pool. Applicants must submit a 10-minute work for orchestra to be rehearsed and read by Berkeley Symphony, under the baton of music director Joana Carneiro, in two reading sessions on May 2nd and 3rd, 2015. Composers will receive artistic and career guidance from the Symphony artistic staff, orchestra musicians, ACO artistic director Derek Bermel and mentor-composer Ken Ueno.
Composers selected are responsible for delivering professional-quality score and parts. Composers will receive a recording of their work for archival and study purposes. Travel and accommodations will be provided.
Applicants must submit an electronic submission form, the orchestral score, a resume, works list, and letter of recommendation. Incomplete, illegible, or late applications will not be considered.

Professional Development Workshop 2014
Under Construction New Music Series centers around two public reading sessions taking place on May 2nd & 3rd, 2015, where selected composers will have their music rehearsed, performed, and professionally recorded for personal, archival and non‐commercial use. After the first reading session composers will receive feedback from the conductor, mentor-composers, and musicians from Berkeley Symphony. Composers will have and opportunity to submit errata for the second reading session.
Composers will also participate in professional development workshops and feedback sessions. The goal for participating composers is to develop a composition style that is deeply personal and artistically true, yet designed to enter the standard orchestra repertory.

Established in 1993, Berkeley Symphony’s Under Construction New Music Program signifies a unique commitment to Bay Area composers and new music. Designed as a reading session to showcase the Bay Area’s composing talents, the program engages the community in contemporary music and its making, as well as provides a rare and invaluable opportunity for emerging composers to further develop their skills and gain practical experience writing for a professional orchestra.
